A safe forum where patients, families, and doctors come together around a rare muscular disease—because access to information and peers can make all the difference.

Together instead of alone

LAMA2-related muscular dystrophy is a rare disease affecting approximately 500 people worldwide. Stichting voor Sara is dedicated to these patients and their families. But rare also means fragmented: the people are scattered, information is dispersed, and new families facing the diagnosis often find themselves on their own.

The foundation wanted a safe online space where patients, family members, and treating physicians can come together. Not only to share medical information, but also to exchange experiences and find support. Especially for new families overwhelmed by the diagnosis, such a place can make all the difference during a frightening time.

The foundation is Discourse: a proven, secure, and maintainable forum platform, customized to meet the specific needs: tailored categories for different user groups, branding that aligns with the foundation, and privacy settings that ensure sensitive conversations remain protected.

A safe space for a rare community

The LAMA2 community is small and spread across the world. Existing channels did not offer the security and structure that was needed. The challenge was to build a place that is both accessible and protected:

1. Privacy and security. Medical experiences and personal stories are shared. The forum must be shielded from search engines and only accessible to verified members.
2. Low barrier for a diverse group. Users range from young patients to elderly family members and medical specialists. The interface must be intuitive without any technical knowledge.
3. Limited budget, maximum impact. As a foundation for a rare disease, every penny counts. The solution must be affordable to build and maintain.
4. Separate and shared spaces. Doctors, patients, and families each need their own conversations, but must also be able to communicate together.

The solution

A deliberate choice for a proven platform, customized to meet the specific needs:

• Discourse platform. Configured and styled to match the foundation’s branding.
• Privacy configuration. That shields the forum from search engines and unauthorized visitors.
• Category structure. With separate and shared spaces per user group.
• Low maintenance costs. By using a proven open-source platform.

A growing community

The forum is up and the foundation has started inviting members and building the community. The content—conversations, knowledge sharing—is now growing organically.

This project was partly pro bono. A deliberate choice to deploy technology where it truly makes a difference.
